INDIVIDUAL GROWTH AND THE CHURCH MEMBER

It is impossible to attain individual spiritual growth without laboring for the salvation of mankind. We gain the most as we give the most. Or, as Christ Jesus said (Luke 6:38), "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together."

Experience shows the student of Christian Science that to continue to grow in ability to apply the truths of this religion to his human affairs—to heal sickness, cure sin, and lessen mortal restrictions that plague him and cause him dismay—he has to take an active part in presenting these truths to others. Membership and activity in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, as well as membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, are called for by the demands of progress.

But church membership is not a means of spiritualizing our thinking while we let the rest of the world go by. Would Jesus have overcome the cross and gained the ascension had he not expressed the love for God and man that reached with healing effect into all the world?
