As a small boy I played with another boy who had an impediment in his speech, and unwittingly I took on this condition. I could speak informally, but when the occasion became formal, I was as one dumb. This impediment followed me into young manhood and became the bane of my existence.
On finding Christian Science, I learned of the mythical nature of error and of the perfection of man as God's image and likeness. Much spiritual growth followed a basic understanding of Science.
I was led to ponder the fifteen verses of Mary Baker Eddy's poem "Christ and Christmas," eventually memorizing them until I could recite the verses as easily as the Lord's Prayer. Each evening I would recite the poem aloud so as to become familiar with the sound of my own voice and also in the hope of giving an expression of gratitude at a Wednesday testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist.
