Teaching the Younger Classes

[This is the second of five addresses given in the Extension of The Mother Church on June 4, 1958, in the interest of the Christian Science Sunday School. Another address will appear next week.]

Christ Jesus gave us a great law in these words (Matt. 18:3): "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."

Humility, innocency, unselfishness, faithful affection, purity, and trust in good characterize the angel thoughts of little children. Jesus also declared (verse 10), "In heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father." No wonder our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, loved little children! She longed for students who would manifest the same simplicity and teachableness and recommended that we watch and pray to preserve childlike virtues unstained from contact with the world.

In making suitable provision for children in her movement, Mrs. Eddy was not emulating those systems which sway children's emotions in order to mold and control the adult intellect. She knew that the Science of Christianity, the Science of Life, naturally appeals to the uncontaminated thought of even the youngest child. Because he is free from falsely educated beliefs that accept matter as reality, the little one naturally accepts God as divine Love and feels himself enfolded within that Love. How naturally, therefore, he learns to heal.
