I was suffering from asthma and also from a nervous breakdown. The doctor said I would not live if I did not get away from the damp climate of the city in which I resided; so I went to the drier climate of another city where I did not know anyone. But I prayed in the only way I then knew, and I asked God to take care of me and to guide me to a good home.

It was eleven thirty at night when I arrived, and I asked the stationmaster if she knew where I could get a room. She directed me to a tourist home operated by a woman who, I later learned, was a Christian Scientist.

Within a week I became better acquainted with this woman, and one day I saw her reading from the Bible and from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. She explained to me something of the teachings of Christian Science and of its healing power. I asked her to read aloud to me from these textbooks and to help me in Christian Science, and she did. Before she had finished reading and, at intervals, silently praying, I felt myself gaining strength; and so I prayed that God would give me continued strength and would show me the way to help myself.
