During the First World War, I...
During the First World War, I was employed on war work. I worked very long hours and under so much strain that when the war ended I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. At this time I read about a doctor in another city who treated his patients through hypnotism. I made a journey to see this doctor, and as soon as I arrived I telephoned his office, but was told he was out of the city.
I decided to remain there over the week end, and on Saturday evening, while walking aimlessly around, I came to a Christian Science Reading Room on the ground floor of a building. The Reading Room was closed, but the window was lighted, and for the first time I saw the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I read the two pages to which it was open, and what I read appealed to me very strongly. When I returned home I lost no time in buying a copy of the textbook, and through its study I found freedom from the nervous trouble that bothered me. Since then I have many times been healed of discord through reading the inspired pages of our textbook. When I first read the chapter "Animal Magnetism Unmasked," I was filled with gratitude for divine guidance and for protection from inquiring further into hypnotic influence.
I should like to express my gratitude for physical healings which I have had, very often with the effective help of practitioners and in other cases through my study of the textbook alone. Among the difficulties healed have been pneumonia, influenza, and an ulcerated stomach. I was also healed of a hernia. A doctor at the plant where I work said that the condition would necessitate either a surgical operation or the wearing of a support. I wore the support for some time, but the angel thought kept recurring to me that God alone is man's support. I put the support aside, but I did so with the mental reservation that if the pain or discomfort came again, I could resume the wearing of the appliance. Although there was no return of pain, the swelling still remained.
