THE REALM OF SUPPOSITION

It was spiritual revelation which enabled Mary Baker Eddy to see that the material sense of life is nothing more than a realm of supposition. Mrs. Eddy comprehended the profound significance of the teaching of Christ Jesus that God is Spirit, the only Father. From this fact she deduced that Spirit's creation is necessarily spiritual and perfect. She saw that Spirit cannot evolve its opposite, matter or matter's conditions—sin, disease, and death. And she realized that the only place in which contraries to God can seem to exist is in a supposed, or mythical, mind.

Our Leader says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 363), "The mythology of evil and mortality is but the material mode of a suppositional mind; while the immortal modes of Mind are spiritual, and pass through none of the changes of matter, or evil."

The recognition that matter and mortal mind are suppositional has the effect of breaking the mesmeric spell which the material sense of life seems to hold over humanity. Sickness and evil thinking fade out of the experience of those who look to Spirit as the perfect Mind, in which man, God's image, lives and acts forever. Those who progressively awaken to the spiritual sense of life find material life less and less convincing.
