THE CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST'S YARDSTICK
The yardstick of the Christian Scientist, that by which he tests and corrects his thought, speech, and action, is the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The earnest study of this book and the utilization of its revealed truths provide the rule or standard for harmonious living.
In the revelation that came to him, John saw an angel holding open in his hand a "little book." The angel symbolizes divine Science. The angel commanded concerning the book (Rev. 10:9), "Take it, and eat it up." Mrs. Eddy writes in regard to the Christian Science textbook (Science and Health, p. 147): "Although this volume contains the complete Science of Mind-healing, never believe that you can absorb the whole meaning of the Science by a simple perusal of this book. The book needs to be studied, and the demonstration of the rules of scientific healing will plant you firmly on the spiritual groundwork of Christian Science. This proof lifts you high above the perishing fossils of theories already antiquated, and enables you to grasp the spiritual facts of being hitherto unattained and seemingly dim."
One is not required to study voluminous works in order to gain a demonstrable understanding of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy has set forth the Science of Christianity in all its completeness in Science and Health; and her other works supplement its teachings.
