It was through the advice of a...
It was through the advice of a physician friend of mine, who was faithfully but unsuccessfully treating my wife for a distressing ailment, that I came into Christian Science. My theological studies, undertaken as preparation for my ministry in one of the churches in our city, did not predispose me to sympathy toward a religious movement which was so far removed from my convictions and which I had scarcely heard mentioned except in a sarcastic way. However, my prejudices disappeared during my very first interview with a Christian Science practitioner.
I learned to appreciate more fully the first chapter of the Bible, where God, Spirit, saw that what He had made was very good. Moreover, I was led to see that evil is completely nonexistent to divine consciousness. I was soon to have proof of this truth when a case of inflammation of the ears, complicated by congestion of the lungs, was healed through Christian Science treatment given by a dear friend. My wife also was able to taste the blessings of Christian Science and find in them real comfort, and we became enthusiastic students of this religion.
Several years later I decided to give up my career as a clergyman. That decision was made in spite of my not having the funds to carry on without having some other means of support for our home.
