New Television Programs
The second group of thirteen films in the "How Christian Science Heals" television series has been produced. These new programs are now beginning to appear on television screens.
Up to this time the first group of programs has been shown by more than one hundred and sixty stations throughout the United States and Canada. They have been received with gratitude and enthusiasm. There is much evidence that they are correcting misconceptions and false impressions about the teachings of Christian Science and about our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
There have been many reports of increased activity in Reading Rooms and increased attendance at our churches. Thousands of letters inquiring about Christian Science have come to The Mother Church.
We are making efforts to arrange for the telecasting of our programs in localities where they have not yet been shown. Contributions from the Field to The Mother Church Television and Radio Fund have been generous and are continuing to flow in. This support is greatly appreciated.
Details concerning the telecasts are listed in The Christian Science Monitor the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
The Impervious Armor and Membership in The Mother Church
Is not the whole world today looking in every direction for an impervios armor?
Listen to these startling words from Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science: "Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 210).
The membership of The Mother Church consists of those consecrated students who are united in their efforts to be clad and to help others be clad in this impervious armor.
One earnestly considering membership should carefully ponder the requirements set forth in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy and fill out the application and the accompanying questionnaire according to directions.
The closing date for the receipt of applications for the next admission of members is May 1, 1956.
Application blanks and any information concerning membership may be obtained at Christian Science Reading Rooms, from practitioners listed in The Christian Science Journal, or form clerks of branch churches and societies. Applications may also be obtained from Gordon V. Comer, Clerk, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
Progress in the College Organizations
From Massachusetts Institute of Technology the Christian Science Organization reports: "Early in the year it was recognized that underlying all organization activities are active, alive, intelligent testimony meetings. We spent almost one whole business meeting considering just how we could make our testimony meetings more helpful and inspiring, both to us and to those who are not yet members. We noted that each of us certainly learned something new or proved some fact about Christian Science each week and that each of us should come prepared to give a testimony each meeting. We might not testify audibly, but at least we should come prepared to give. Our meetings have become better; the testimonies are more helpful; the attendance has increased; our membership has grown; and healings are taking place."
From an eastern college come the following testimonies:
"In the spring of my senior year in high school, I realized that none of the colleges to which I had applied for entrance in the fall was a satisfactory choice. More prayerful work was done. Soon an opening occurred at a college that I had not previously considered. The initial striving to find my right place led me to continue to seek divine guidance during the following four years. As graduation approaches, I can thank Christian Science for innumerable proofs of God's care and direction in every phase of my collegiate life."
Another student writes: "Shortly after I arrived at college at the beginning of my freshman year, I learned that my posture was below standard. It was requested that I attend a posture class, and I reluctantly agreed, but my posture still did not improve. When asked to attend the class again, I chose not to do so, but decided to work more consecratedly in Christian Science. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner and through my own prayers I was able to see more clearly man's uprightness and perfection as God's image and likeness.
"As I went to take the posture test again at the end of my sophomore year, the words of a hymn were most helpful (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 51). However, the one administering the test remarked that my posture had not improved sufficiently. I prayerfully sought to reverse this erroneous suggestion, as we are taught to do in Christian Science. A few days later, when the test had been graded mechanically, I learned that I had passed."
The Christian Science Organization at Oklahoma A. and M. in its annual progress report writes:
"For the first time, our organization held two lectures in one academic year. Attendance at both lectures was encouraging, and our members expressed gratitude many times for the preparation and fruitage meetings held prior to and after the lectures. The healing message from each lecture was the answer to prayer. Last spring the organization participated, along with other religious groups, in the annual campus Religious Emphasis Week program by bringing an experienced Christian Scientist to speak in classrooms, at seminars, and at meetings before other denominational gatherings.
"Several members of the organization assisted with the all-campus preparations for Religious Emphasis Week, serving on committees and in other capacities. The local branch church, First Church of Christ, Scientist, Stillwater, Oklahoma, generously provided air-mail copies of The Christian Science Monitor for distribution during the program. The organization members are grateful for the recognition and reception given Christian Science during this annual campus event.
"The organization members are preparing for a good and fruitful year to come, knowing that, as Mary Baker Eddy says in 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' (p. 66), 'Each successive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love.'"
Opportunities for Employment with The Christian Science Publishing Society
An invitation is extended to Christian Scientists experienced in mechanical divisions of the newspaper or printing industry to inquire about service with The Christian Science Publishing Society. Letters should give details as to experience and general qualifications and should be addressed to Personnel Manager, One Norway Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
Attention, Members of the Armed Services and Their Families
Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services, which include arrangements for regular Christian Science services, treatment, and other assistance for men and women in the armed forces, extend throughout the United States, Canada, and many overseas areas. Information regarding these activities and lists of overseas Ministers and Representatives will be furnished upon request.
Service personnel or members of their families are asked to send names and addresses of Christian Scientists in the armed forces to Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts. To enable this department to be of the greatest service, changes of military address should be reported promptly.
Christian Scientists are encouraged to register as such, rather than under the general term "Protestant." In the armed forces of the United States, England, and Canada they may have the words "Christian Science" or a meaningful abbreviation thereof stamped on their identification tags or discs.
The Mother Church continues to furnish Ministers for forts, camps, bases, and stations, as well as for Veterans' Hospitals. Information regarding Christian Science activities in these installations and hospitals may be obtained from the chaplain's office at each installation and hospital, or by writing direct to the Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services.
Testimony Meetings
Meetings at which testimonies of Christian Science healing are given, are held in Christian Science churches on Wednesdays. A cordial invitation to attend these meetings, as well as the Sunday services, is extended to all. Information telling where and when these are held is given in the Directory in The Christian Science Journal.
From the Treasurer of The Mother Church
Payments of per capita tax and contributions, also changes of address, should be sent to Roy Garrett Watson, Treasurer, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
