When Christian Science found...
When Christian Science found me. I was unhappy, dissatisfied, and without any religion. Realizing that I had no religion to offer my two children, I sent them to the nearest Sunday School, which was a Christian Science Sunday School. I became interested in the teaching they were receiving and began to investigate Science for myself.
One day my ten-year-old son was sent home from school by the principal and the school nurse. He had been playing handball and had dislocated a finger. This was an opportunity, I thought, to find out if Christian Science could really help us. I took the boy to a practitioner; and she spent about half an hour praying for him and declaring the truth, which Jesus said would make free. Then she quoted to me what Mrs. Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 401), "Until the advancing age admits the efficacy and supremacy of Mind, it is better for Christian Scientists to leave surgery and the adjustment of broken bones and dislocations to the fingers of a surgeon, while the mental healer confines himself chiefly to mental reconstruction and to the prevention of inflammation."
She said that, if I wished, I could take my son to a physician.
I jumped to my feet and declared fervently, "No! I know that God can do anything."
Then the practitioner said to the boy, "Hold up your hand." He did so, and the finger was perfectly normal. He was sent back to school, and when I next saw him, within the hour, he was playing handball again.
Christian Science then became everything to me and brought harmony into my home. A member of my family noticed a change in me, and she said: "This is very strange. I cannot recall anyone in our family having been religious like this." Then one day she saw me in a condition of pain because of some trouble with a shoulder and arm. She said that I had neuritis and would get worse if I did not see a physician at once.
When next I felt the pain, it came to me clearly that I was suffering from a sense of personal responsibility for my family. I recalled Isaiah's prophecy concerning the Messiah (9:6): "The government shall be upon his shoulder." An immediate healing resulted, and it has been permanent.
Another healing was that of my small daughter, who suffered from frequent severe earaches. On one such occasion I turned to the Lord's Prayer. The words "Our Father" flooded my thought with love, and the child never again suffered from earache.
My love for Mrs. Eddy and my appreciation of the Christian Science movement, which she established, have increased with my understanding of her teachings. I have received and witnessed many healings, sometimes through much work and consecration. Christian Science points the way. In addition, it gives us rules whereby to demonstrate divine Principle so that we need no longer walk in darkness.
My gratitude is heartfelt for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, for class instruction, and for the help of consecrated practitioners. My desire is to be obedient to the teachings of Christian Science and thus be of value to the world.—(Mrs.) Madeleine Darroch, Los Angeles, California.
