SLAVERY OR FREEDOM?

No one wants to be a slave, yet many people are slaves to fear, ignorance, sickness, lack, or sin. As Jesus freed the man at the pool of Bethesda of thirty-eight years of self-imposed slavery, so today Christian Science is here for all, to lead the way out of bondage to sin and suffering into the freedom of the sons of God.

As in the allegory of Adam and Eve, the serpent still whispers to human consciousness. In modern language it says: "Follow the crowd. Don't miss out on the satisfaction of material living. Don't be different from others or you will be unpopular. To be a man and to be successful in business or in social activities you must do as others do." The acceptance of such evil suggestions is the way which leads to slavery, not to freedom, to misery, not to true manhood.

Referring to the sinful and sickly beliefs of material sense which enslave mankind, Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 405), "Choke these errors in their early stages, if you would not cherish an army of conspirators against health, happiness, and success." Through correct reasoning based on the teachings of Christian Science, one must either awaken himself or be awakened to the dangers of self-indulgence. Through prayer and study he gains a higher concept of himself as a son of God. He learns that God's ever-present law of good is available to govern his every thought and act.
