HOW TO BECOME A LAW TO ONESELF

Through the medium of the press, radio, television, our attention is being drawn continually to the destructive forces of mortal mind—to material so-called laws regarding health and safety. If we are not alert, we may accept and repeat these laws as if they were applicable to ourselves and to others. These laws are, in truth, but material beliefs which govern mankind erroneously through the generally accepted illusion that they are real.

Christian Science teaches that the real universe is spiritual and harmonious and that man, reflecting Spirit, God, is forever at peace in this spiritual universe. The only law which man is subject to is the law of Spirit, or the spiritual force of immortal Mind. By realizing these truths and by applying them in our daily experience, we become a law to ourselves.

The Apostle Paul, who preached Christianity to the Gentiles, had much to say concerning divine law. The resistance he encountered among the people was the conflict between the flesh and Spirit. He spoke of the flesh when he said (Rom. 8:7), "The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." He understood that it was the carnal, or mortal, mind which hid Christ's sonship with God from the people's view. Their material sense of existence beclouded their sense of the truth which Paul was preaching.
