The founding fathers, in times of ... stress, tinned their attention to God. Too few of our people nowadays have remembered, and still fewer have been influenced by the fact, that our leaders—Washington, Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and others—turned to prayer in their moments of greatest achievement, as well as in the hours of darkest anxiety. Of late years our absorption in material progress has made us apt to forget the spiritual roots from which we grew....

It is in God, indeed, that we must trust; it is by Him alone we can hope to be delivered from whatever dangers beset us.
