When I was a young man in the...

When I was a young man in the British Army with no leaning towards religion of which I was aware, in good health, and without a serious care in the world, a friend took me with him to a Christian Science lecture. What the lecturer said on that occasion appeared so obviously true that I accepted Christian Science instantly, and I could not understand why everyone else did not do the same. Since that time my every problem has been met with Christian Science as the background of thought.

While seeking employment after leaving the Army in 1929, I had help from a practitioner. As a result I obtained a position in a firm where there have been many opportunities to demonstrate Science. In my work I have gained an understanding confidence in the government of God, good, which operates untouched by human inadequacy and which molds our affairs as we learn to accept the living presence of Life, Truth, and Love.

During the Second World War when I was in action in the Western Desert of Egypt, and later when I was a prisoner of war in Japan, my understanding of Christian Science helped me to maintain confidence and calm in the midst of trying circumstances. Once we were cut off from supplies, short of water, and without sufficient petrol to carry us many miles back across the desert. I knew that man has by reflection all that he needs. In the middle of the night, beside our track we came across first an abandoned water cart and then a drum of petrol from a bombed truck, each more than sufficient for my squadron's need.
