My testimony of gratitude for the...
My testimony of gratitude for the many blessings that have been mine through the application of the truth as taught in Christian Science is long overdue. When Christian Science was presented to me, my need was so great that not only did I accept it immediately, but I literally wore out my first copy of our great textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Often I held the book in one hand while I cooked or performed other duties with the other hand, so eager was I to discover what came next in this wonderful revelation of Truth.
Although I knew nothing about practitioners or the activities of our movement, I began immediately to experience healings simply from my eager reading. I was at that time expecting my second child. Her birth was quick and harmonious in contrast to the prolonged suffering that had accompanied the birth of my first child, which occurred before I knew of Science. Afterward four more children were born under Christian Science treatment, and their births were completely without pain.
So glorious was my new-found knowledge that God is good and that good alone is real that at first I was troubled by Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 574 of Science and Health, "The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares." Why, I argued, need there be any "suffering sense" in one's experience if Love, good, is all? In the years since my first glimpse of Truth I have learned to be grateful for the purification that has come through affliction. Because of affliction, I have had to accept the truth more wholeheartedly and through consecrated effort learn more about God in order to overcome the affliction. Thus angels have indeed been "entertained unawares."
