Many times before becoming a student of Christian Science I would ponder the reason for my existence and think: "Surely there is more to life than I realize. Surely there is some reason for man's existence, something he can and must do to make his life worthwhile." But until Science was presented to me, I had never found what I was seeking. Now I am grateful to say that each day I am realizing more and more how important every individual is as an expression of God. In the words of the Apostle Paul (I Cor. 6:20), "Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

After I had been studying Christian Science for a few months, I sincerely desired to become a member of a Church of Christ, Scientist. I knew that in order to be ready for this step I would have to be healed of the smoking habit, which had enslaved me for fifteen years. I therefore studied and applied to the best of my understanding the truths I was learning. Although at times I would be free for several weeks, the false desire would return with greater urgency, for I was using human will, instead of being healed through the divine will.

After several months a chronic condition called a spinal cyst, which had troubled me periodically for over twenty years, became aggravated. During these years I had sought help from two physicians, both of whom told me that as long as the condition remained chronic and was bearable, it was wise to let it alone; but in the event that it became acute, the only alternative was an operation. This would not, however, necessarily end the trouble, they said, for conditions of that kind very often returned.
