AN OPEN LETTER ON AN IMPORTANT SUBJECT

Dear Friend:

Your letter made me very happy because of your sincerely expressed desire that both you and your wife wanted to do your part in helping to bring the light of Christian Science to your fellow men through active membership in a Christian Science branch church. Your sincere desire to prepare yourself for this opportunity will enable you to overcome the barrier which seems to stand in your way—namely, the habit of smoking cigarettes. The truths of Christian Science presented in this letter apply also to those who use alcohol or who are in bondage to other undesirable habits.

You have asked me to point out to you how you can achieve your objective, and I offer you the following statements based on the teachings of Christian Science. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, points out that the leading factor of Christian Science is twofold: God or Spirit is All; matter is nothing. If we accept these basic facts, we must then regard every material manifestation as a lie—nothing. The Christian Scientist puts all so-called material existence, including the beliefs of birth, growth, maturity, death, and dissolution, into the classification of nothingness. He includes in this classification fear, ignorance, sin, false beliefs, false appetites, and all the evil and material conditions of so-called human existence. Our work is to look on these things as nothing—as no part of man's true being. And we must prove them to be nothing.
