CAPACITIES OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Man lives in the consciousness of good. He has no Life, no Mind, and no consciousness but the spiritual. This is an absolute truth concerning man. Spiritual consciousness cannot become unconscious. It cannot be cut off from its source, disturbed, distorted, or darkened. It exists in Mind and is thus perpetually aware of Mind's enlightenment.

When we work or pray in Christian Science, we can do so without fatigue, for spiritual consciousness will uplift and refresh our human consciousness. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 519, 520), "The highest and sweetest rest, even from a human standpoint, is in holy work." Thought divinely empowered and inspired by prayer recognizes the vast capacities and capabilities of man. The radius of human consciousness is enlarged and its capacities spiritualized as we grow into an understanding of Christian Science.

Jesus was aware of the mental nature of existence, and this fact is illustrated in his first contact with Nathanael as described in John (1:43, 51). The Master's range of perception was wider and less corporeal than that of other men. He had learned to utilize the senses of Soul, and in doing so, to discard material sense testimony, which bears witness to matter, time, and limitation.
