BE COMFORTED!

It is the office of the Christ to comfort and cheer. Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, promised to send a Comforter, and our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, declares this Comforter to be divine Science. Tenderly Jesus consoled his disciples with the words (John 14:27): "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you....Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

The Christian Science practitioner strives to follow in the footsteps of the Master. He quiets and destroys the fear of those coming to him for help by lifting their thoughts above error and reassuring them with the truth of the allness and the omnipotence of God, good. Such comfort, based on spiritual understanding, brings confidence; and it heals.

When our Master healed the one sick of the palsy, he first comforted him with the words (Matt. 9:2), "Be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee." What a relief for him who may have brooded for a long time over his past mistakes. Jesus lifted the mental darkness that claimed to be sapping the mortal body. In the Scriptural records of healing, whether of fear, lack, sin, or sickness, we find that reassuring, positive words often preceded the demonstrations of Jesus. This was the case when the disciples were frightened at seeing him walk on the sea, and again when he healed the woman who had suffered for twelve years "with an issue of blood." Mrs. Eddy counsels us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 411), "Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients." The divine Love that casts out fear changes thought and corrects it.
