LOVE THAT HEALS

Luke 5:13

He touched him, touched the one whom all had shunned,
Who cried for help, in lonely quarantine.
No doubt a relative or two stood off
Calling out words of pity, or some friend,
Who once had shared his table, felt constrained
To draw a moralizing, cold conclusion,
At a safe distance.

Words came readily—
Some ancient law or proverb to be chanted.

And then came Jesus, clear-eyed, unafraid,
Without a thought for self, with hand outstretched
To touch and heal him; touch that broken heart,
Cleansing away all fear, all sin, all grief.
He did not preach about a far-off god.
He did not doubt the power that sent him there.
For him no leper—only brother man,
Made in God's likeness. This the love that heals!
