I have found help and inspiration...

I have found help and inspiration so many times in reading the testimonies that I should like to express my gratitude for all that the study of Christian Science has brought to me. Although this Science has been my only remedy for more than fifteen years, at the beginning of my study of it I was not searching for a healing religion, but for an understandable explanation of God and man.

For many years, including all of the Second World War, I was in command of a merchant ship. I relied on Christian Science for comfort and protection, and though most of the war years were spent in what were called dangerous areas, my ship was never harmed.

Just after the war I was making a winter crossing of the North Pacific. Owing to continuous bad weather, I was running short of fuel and had to go to a port in Alaska for supplies. This situation had been entirely unforeseen, and I had no charts for the Aleutian Islands except a small-scale ocean chart. To find the way among the fogbound islands in bad weather with no proper charts, with the ship in ballast condition, and with only a rough estimate of my position after many days of foggy weather, appeared to be a hopeless task. It was on Christian Science that I leaned, and little by little I found my way into port. When I arrived and was supplied with charts, I found that an area where I had sheltered in the lee of an island for half a night, thinking it was safe, contained many dangers.
