Christian Science was presented...

Christian Science was presented to me at a time of great need following the birth of our first child, which left me with extreme weakness, nervous exhaustion, sleeplessness, fear, and a sense of discouragement. The future looked black, for the doctors could not help me. Chiropractors had told me that I had so many vertebrae out of place that it would take an indefinite number of treatments to remedy the condition and then there could be no assurance that I would be well. In addition, a member of the family had recently passed on, and my grief was great.

This extremity was God's opportunity. Seeing my great need, a friend presented Christian Science to me and loaned me a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which was eagerly accepted. Then the help of a practitioner was secured. This loving help, which came when I was just coming into Science, will never be forgotten.

I started to read the textbook from the beginning and wondered if I would ever understand it. The practitioner encouraged me to continue reading and said that its truths would become clearer to me as I persisted in my study. This proved to be true. These words were particularly helpful (p. 449): "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing." As I pondered these words, it was a comfort to know that even a grain of truth heals; but I had to learn the importance of the last part of the statement, "more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing." This meant persistence in holding to the truth, standing firm against every argument of mortal mind, and going forward to gain more spiritual understanding.
