In the year 1934 I had reached...

In the year 1934 I had reached a place of great extremity. I was ill with a lung disease for which different doctors had said there was no cure. My home was discordant, and my income was inadequate. I was in great despair. I operated a little shop, and at the recommendation of an advertising representative of The Christian Science Monitor I placed several advertisements in the Monitor, hoping thereby to improve my business. When customers came in response to the advertisement I wondered what they and the advertising representative had that made them so happy and cheerful. Each time the representative called she said something which made me feel in a better frame of mind.

A Christian Science literature distribution box was maintained in my shop, and every time I dusted it I felt resentful of the added burden it placed on me. One day as I was dusting the literature box I knocked it over. A Sentinel fell out, and these words stared up at me (John 8:32): "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." I read the words over and over again. Then I read every word of that Sentinel and every piece of literature in the box.

The next day, unknown to my family, I went to a Christian Science practitioner. On my way home I suddenly realized that I was singing and could breathe normally again. The pain in my chest was gone, and I knew that I was healed. Only after my family kept remarking on how well I looked did I reveal that Christian Science had healed me. The healing has been permanent. Afterward there came a better sense of home and employment. All my needs were met. In a year's time I became a member of The Mother Church and a branch church, and I cannot begin to express my gratitude for their activities.
