"THINGS NEW AND OLD"

The Christ is eternal and infinite. It has existed in all generations. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 333), "Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and the prophets caught glorious glimpses of the Messiah, or Christ, which baptized these seers in the divine nature, the essence of Love."

In later times than those of the Old Testament the Christ was clearly expressed through Jesus, whose wonderful works bore witness to his Christlike understanding. In proportion as we in this age receive and express the Christ, healing and regeneration take place. The Word is as powerful now as it was in the beginning. We have the healing truth in Christian Science, and we can understand and demonstrate it.

The mission of the Christ is not primarily to heal sickness but to destroy sin. Its purpose is to advance humanity spiritually and to reveal the kingdom of heaven within, thus destroying the errors of the carnal mind and its so-called manifestations, including sickness. The basic truths of spiritual existence are to be found in the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. In Christian Science great emphasis is placed on these fundamental teachings, and students are encouraged to be obedient to both their literal and their spiritual meaning.
