Soon after becoming interested...

Soon after becoming interested in Christian Science, I found that my progress in our religion was blocked by my smoking, in which I indulged extensively. I tried to give up the habit, but the desire persisted, and I became discouraged. Then I determined that I would not smoke and would ask help from a Christian Science practitioner if I needed it. It was three days before I called on a practitioner, and during that time I was very miserable with a nagging desire for a cigarette.

On reaching the practitioner's office I poured out my trouble. He asked, "Where is the kingdom of heaven?" I replied that the Bible says that it is within us. He then said: "Well, if the kingdom of heaven is within you, where is this desire for tobacco? Two such opposites cannot fill the same space at the same time." I immediately saw the truth of this and was instantaneously healed. That was over twenty-five years ago, and there has never been any desire for tobacco since that day.

I was beautifully protected several times during six years of service in World War II. One instance was while I was on a troopship in the Mediterranean. The ship was being rushed forward with badly needed troops and supplies and with only a very meager escort. The enemy was determined to keep us from reaching our destination, and we were repeatedly attacked by torpedo-carrying aircraft.
