THE TRUTH WE LIVE

One great reward gained by the student in whom the teachings of Christian Science are unfolding the true pattern of Life is the realization that this is no abstract study, but a day-by-day, hour-by-hour, manner of living. Moreover, as the student grows in spiritual understanding he finds that it becomes increasingly natural for him to live in accordance with the rules set forth by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

Yet how often is one prevented from fully accepting the blessing of understanding his individual role in Science because of false fear based on the assumption that he may thus be committing the sin of egotism or false pride. Of course no true Christian Scientist would arrogate to himself either the assumption of sanctity or the claim of individual holiness. But the fact is that there is genuine humility in claiming one's rightful place as an individual spiritual reflection of the All-in-all. More than that, no Christian Scientist can excuse his conduct in doing less. Jesus himself acknowledged to the Nazarenes in the synagogue the truth of the ancient proverb (Luke 4:23), "Physician, heal thyself."

Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health, p. 317), "The understanding of his spiritual individuality makes man more real, more formidable in truth, and enables him to conquer sin, disease, and death." So how, if we ascribe the honor and glory to its proper source, God, can we let a false sense of modesty prevent our doing this most essential thing—claiming individual understanding and demonstration of what constitutes Life, Truth, and Love?
