Each year the observance of Independence...

Each year the observance of Independence Day renews in me a deep sense of gratitude for Christian Science and the freedom it has brought me. We commemorate our nation's freedom on July fourth each year. As Christian Scientists we can daily give thanks for our individual freedom from false beliefs, for we have learned the meaning of the freedom of which Jesus spoke when he said (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Liberation from certain specific fears has brought me the greatest sense of freedom. I was afraid of sickness, of death, of the opinions of others, of lack, and of failure in whatever I undertook. Then I learned the definition of God given by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 587): "The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." When I acknowledged God's love, His ever-presence and all-power, I found that I had nothing to fear. By denying the reality of all that is unlike God, good, and affirming man's unity with God I found freedom.

There have been healings of various natures in my family, among them those of chicken pox and influenza. Social drinking and smoking have been abandoned, undesirable traits of character have been overcome, and protection has been realized.
