Our family learned of the Christ-healing...

Our family learned of the Christhealing through the need of my mother, who for several years had suffered great discomfort and pain from a difficulty for which, according to medical science, the only cure was surgery. Following her healing through Christian Science, I had a desultory interest in this Science during my later school and college years. But only when I recognized a need for greater spiritual development in my own experience did I really accept the great gift of Christian Science.

I attended a Sunday School during childhood and early adolescence and was fairly well grounded in the letter of the Scriptures, but their spiritual interpretation, as I found it through the study of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was a revelation to me. In Isaiah we read (55:1), "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters." Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, offers a similar invitation to suffering humanity to find release from all their ills. Her patient devotion to her task of sharing her discovery of Christian Science with the world is to me a never-ending marvel. In her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 she writes (p. 2), "The song of Christian Science is, 'Work—work—work—watch and pray.'" What an example she set for us!

Some time ago, while in the garden, I suddenly stood up under a sturdily built arbor, striking the top of my head so violently that I was knocked to a sitting position on the ground. Somewhat dazed, I put my hand to my head and found that it had been cut and was bleeding profusely. At once I declared that no accidents could occur in God's kingdom and that God's child could not be injured. In a very short time the bleeding stopped, and there was no further discomfort. In a few days more not a trace of the wound remained.
