Continual unfoldment, joyous progress

"This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it" (Ps. 118:24). Each morning we can look forward with childlike confidence to continuous good. God's law causes true unfoldment or progress. We can declare with assurance then that no mortal supposition can keep us from spiritual unfoldment and joyous progress.

Progress need not come through suffering; it can come through an ever-increasing sense of the glorious nature of true being. Let us not wait until forced by some difficult experience to make a vigorous effort to advance out of the belief that matter and evil are real. Instead, let us earnestly strive to be holier and endeavor to keep the fact of perfect God and perfect man uppermost in thought. As we see that we have the choice of either being driven to progress by suffering or, through joyous, consecrated effort, hourly keeping the spiritual facts of being before us, we should find it easy to choose the joyous way.

We should never believe that to be successful Christian Scientists we have to be deprived of something good in life. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says (Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 19, 20): "The spiritual sense of Life and its grand pursuits is of itself a bliss, health-giving and joy-inspiring. This sense of Life illumes our pathway with the radiance of divine Love; heals man spontaneously, morally and physically,—exhaling the aroma of Jesus' own words, 'Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.'"
