WHAT WE NEED

The critical and chaotic conditions appearing in our world today present a distinct challenge to the Christian metaphysician— and indeed to every citizen. Certainly such complexities and crosspurposes are no part of God's good government, always supreme, untouched by false, precarious sense testimony. Humanity needs to awaken from the material dream of fear and discord in order to claim the true heritage of God-given dominion as recorded in the first chapter of the Bible.

"But how?" asks the earnest inquirer. "What can one person do about it?"

The first book of Kings records that affairs in Israel were so obnoxious that Elijah, the prophet, despaired of accomplishing anything constructive. He was so thoroughly discouraged that he sat down under a juniper tree and prayed that he might die. But an angel, a divine message, appeared and gave him sustenance and strength to go farther. When he lodged in a cave for security, God's command was to "go forth, and stand upon the mount" (I Kings 19:11). A great wind tore apart the mountain and broke the rocks. After that an earthquake. Then a fire. But the Lord was not in any of these—only in the still small voice which came after the fire, and which speaks to the innermost thought of the humble listener.
