"Trials are proofs of God's care"...

"Trials are proofs of God's care" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 66). These words have come to me many times over a period of years and have never failed to bring a great deal of comfort and a sense of gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for giving us Christian Science. When I first read those words I was very new in the study of Christian Science, and their full meaning was not revealed to me then, as my life was very serene, and there was nothing to indicate that it would ever be otherwise. But within a year's time everything that I thought was necessary to my happiness had been taken away: my home and other material possessions were gone, and the passing on of my mother was the greatest loss of all.

I turned to a practitioner for help in these trials, the same practitioner to whom I have turned during the years since then when it seemed I could not handle some problem my-self. Through her patience, unfailing love, and help I was able to rise above the discordant conditions of grief and lack.

A healing of pneumonia was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. It came through a complete reliance on God and His care, with never a thought of turning to any other means of healing. I awakened very early one morning feeling quite ill. A practitioner was called, and a Christian Science nurse was employed. During the day I was vaguely conscious of those around me, but I did not have strength enough to speak to them, and the thought kept coming to me that I was passing on. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 1), "Desire is prayer," and I did have the desire to demonstrate good health, happiness, and all the other qualities of God.
