Developing Membership Support

[Extracts from reports prepared for the Reading Room Division by two branch church workers]

Newport Beach, California

Inspired by an account in the "Our Reading Rooms" column in the Christian Science Sentinel which told of Reading Room displays specially prepared in connection with a membership meeting, our staff decided to ask its executive board for permission to prepare such a display for those attending the two sessions of our annual business meeting.

As soon as permission was granted we wrote to the Reading Room Division for helpful information on pleasing ways of grouping the books and other items we wished to call to members' attention. From the reports on similar displays prepared by other librarians many useful ideas were taken. From the beginning, the development of our own presentation was demonstration. We saw clearly that our purpose in arranging it was to rouse the membership as a whole to a fuller appreciation of Mary Baker Eddy, her work, and her books, and to bring to members' attention the many wonderful study aids which are to be found in their own Reading Room. Our two evenings of displays more than accomplished this purpose. Members remarked to attendants at these displays that they had no idea that all of these books were obtainable in our Reading Room.
