USHERING, THE EXPRESSION OF DIVINE LOVE

Ushering in a Christian Science church is a holy experience, for it is an activity in which the qualities of God, divine Love, are made manifest. Ushering consists of far more than being in an appointed place at an appointed time to perform a routine duty. Ushering has also to do with spiritual ideas, their acceptance into thought, and their correction of human consciousness through the acknowledgment of God as the only Mind, the only source of ideas. From this it will be seen that good ushering is good thinking as much as it is good doing.

Where does the usher's work begin? In the material edifice of a church? No, in his own consciousness. And when does it begin? The moment he begins to welcome ideas of Truth and utilizes their power to destroy errors of belief.

An usher, according to a dictionary definition, is "an officer or servant who has the care of the door." One door at which each one of us must maintain a close and constant vigil is the door of his own consciousness. "Stand porter at the door of thought," counsels our loving and watchful Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, on page 392 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Watching faithfully at the door of thought, the usher will be prepared to do well the duties assigned to him in church. He will be punctual in his arrival and receptive to the words read to the assembled ushers before the service. When he takes his place in the auditorium his thought will be clear and alert to the correct performance of each duty.
