STANDSTILL
A tree
may grow in width and height,
It may not leave its rooted stance;
Its purpose is to be upright,
To bless its given circumstance.
Jesus stood still: he learned to wait
That those who followed might catch up.
The blind, the halt, were not too late
To share his bread and drink his cup.
In times most hurried he is wise
Who makes less haste and learns to stand,
Aware of greater enterprise,
A shadow in a desert land.
