ASCENSION THROUGH AWAKENING

In Christian Science, healing and regeneration are the results of spiritual awakening. The more fully we awaken to divine reality and to our real being as God's reflection and expression, the nearer we approach the perfection required by the Master in his words (Matt. 5:48), "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

Jesus' teaching completely reverses the customary modes of mortal thinking, wherein man is regarded as mortal, material, fallen, and a sinner, compelled to work out of a condition of sin and materiality into spiritual being. The Master refused to accept this false picture of man and proved the correctness of his understanding of man as spiritual and perfect, the image and likeness of God, by healing all manner of disease. He recognized perfection and harmony as the natural and present state of man.

Under the marginal heading "Ascending the scale," Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 189): "The human mortal mind, by an inevitable perversion, makes all things start from the lowest instead of from the highest mortal thought. The reverse is the case with all the formations of the immortal divine Mind. They proceed from the divine source; and so, in tracing them, we constantly ascend in infinite being."
