Twenty-seven years ago I was...

Twenty-seven years ago I was told by the doctors that I had hemorrhage of the stomach and that if I did not set medical help, I would not live long. I turned away from them and decided to try Christian Science, having read some authorized literature that had been given me. Knowing that I could not continue in the condition I was in, I called a friend to come and tell me something about Christian Science. When I asked her if I could be healed, she replied that I could.

Absent treatment was requested from a practitioner, and I soon dropped off to sleep. In about an hour I awoke free from pain. When I asked my friend what had happened to me, she replied, "You received a healing." I had never felt better in my life. I asked her if I could eat something, and she said that she would prepare breakfast for me. However, I told her that since I was healed, I would prepare it myself. I prepared and ate a hearty meal, something I had not been able to do when I had the stomach trouble.

The healing deeply impressed me, and I asked my friend how it had come about. She said that after I had read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I would know. She obtained the textbook for me, and I read it day and night till I had read it through. The teachings in it were so different from what I had been taught that I grasped very little of their meaning till I started reading the textbook again; then I began to understand it.

Although I had loved the Bible and read it all my life, I began to realize that I had had a very poor concept of God. I had always believed that I would have to experience death before I could see God or enter heaven. When the truth unfolded to me that God is Love, present here and now, I was so filled with gratitude that I found no words to express my joy. One healing followed another until I felt that I was being made anew.

One of the healings was that of constipation of long standing, and it came through my own understanding. Shortly afterward I stepped in a hole, throwing my ankle out of joint. I sat down, and this thought came to me (Science and Health, p. 264): "We must look where we would walk, and we must act as possessing all power from Him in whom we have our being." In a few minutes I felt the bone in my ankle slip back into place, and I went on my way. When I returned home I looked at the ankle. There was no evidence that anything had happened, and from that day it has never given me any trouble.

For the many healings and blessings that have come to me, I give praise to God. The example of Christ Jesus and the revelation of Mrs. Eddy bring daily inspiration. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a Christian Science Society, which I helped to organize, as well as for class instruction and for service on various church committees, which enables me to work in the vineyard of Truth.—(Mrs) Lillie B. Hindman, Arlington, Texas.
