LETTERS TO THE PRESS FROM CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

[Translated from Dutch]

In [a late 1952] issue an article appeared concerning healing through magic. . . . That the writer puts Christian Science in this category and calls those who practice it faith healers shows that he does not have an understanding or appreciation of its teachings. In order to prevent misunderstanding, it should also be stated here that the "wonder-boy" mentioned in the article referred to has no connection with Christian Science.

Christian Science was established in the second half of the previous century by Mary Baker Eddy in the United States. This religion reveals the spiritual law of healing as it was proclaimed and practiced by Christ Jesus in the reformation of sinners and the healing of the sick. Those who understand this law sufficiently to practice it successfully know that the healings accomplished in Christian Science have nothing to do with suggestion and that they are neither mysterious nor miraculous.

Mental work, or prayer, in Christian Science is based on the recognition that God is omnipotent and perfect, and that man is His image and likeness. Sickness is not a creation of God, and the. realization of man's oneness with Him destroys the belief in sickness in the human consciousness, and this results in the healing of the patient.

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which may be found in Christian Science Reading Rooms and in most public libraries, and which is now also available in Dutch translation, Mrs. Eddy writes (pp. 494, 495): "Our Master cast out devils (evils) and healed the sick. It should be said of his followers also, that they cast fear and all evil out of themselves and others and heal the sick. God will heal the sick through man, whenever man is governed by God."

Christian Scientists only ask to be judged by their works and refer in this connection to the verified testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals, as well as to those given at the Wednesday evening meetings [in Christian Science churches] in all parts of the world.
