LEARNING TO AWAKEN
It is interesting to consider that our Master, who said, "I can of mine own self do nothing" (John 5:30), did more to awaken the world from the dream of materiality than anyone else. Jesus taught us to impersonalize existence scientifically—to see that Truth always does the work and to recognize the impersonality of the error from which we need to be awakened. Through the study of Christian Science we are learning that it is this impersonalization which helps to make Truth practical in our lives.
Through the teachings of Christian Science one finds release from the fear, frustration, and limitation which appear to go hand in hand with a material sense of existence. Through this spiritual awakening, one discovers that man is not a material organism with a mind inside, but is spiritual, the image and likeness of God, Spirit, Mind. Material beliefs acquired through what one calls his education sometimes seem to yield slowly to spiritual understanding. However, we need never faint, for the struggle can end only in one way—in victory for Truth.
One who subsequently became a student of Christian Science had been taught in college that the chemical elements of matter were permanent and indestructible entities. Material science, which has greatly advanced since this student's college days, today virtually concedes that what have been called the elements of matter are now resolved into states of energy. Not very long ago the atom was considered to be the ultimate entity of matter, but further advancement made in the field of physics has revealed the necessity of a new appraisement. In consequence, there appeared new theories recognizing the atom as more ethereal in nature. This constant change of theories, with each succeeding one recognizing matter as being less material, has brought about the interesting conclusion that matter exists merely as a theory. And a theory is essentially mental.
