THE WORD MUST PREVAIL

Pilate was voicing the desire of mortal mind to define within its own comprehension a statement of eternal fact when he asked Jesus (John 18:38), "What is truth?" In other words, he wanted to know what facts of life would prevail. Since that day—and even before then—thinkers have been busy with philosophies and creeds trying to answer the question, "What is truth?" without producing a satisfactory explanation in human theories.

The Christian Scientist in contemplating this question bases his reasoning upon God. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 275), "The starting-point of divine Science is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind,—that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle." The channels of thought which flow from this declaration lead into a knowledge of divine Principle, and this knowledge of divine Principle opens into the understanding of God.

We are told in Acts that after Paul's two years of labor in Ephesus "God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul," and "so mightily grew the word of God and prevailed" (19:11,20). The Word must grow and prevail; just growing is not enough. Its effects must be seen in consciousness as men grow progressively beyond material beliefs and cease to give power to matter, cease to look for signs in material things or to diagnose the human body to find the cause of disease. When anyone has grown to such an extent that he ceases to look for signs in matter, the Word of God prevails. Learning more of this Word and using it, one can conquer all false beliefs concerning God's government and His relationship to man.
