More than forty years ago a very dear elderly friend of mine had a healing in Christian Science of heart and stomach trouble. At her recommendation I bought a copy of the textbook she was always talking about, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I remember very distinctly the day I looked into this precious volume, and I have read from it practically every day since. Its logic appealed to me, but I had to be shown the practicability of its teachings.

I had been a habitual medicine taker, as I suffered from chronic stomach trouble. Sometimes medicine had relieved the condition, and sometimes it had not. I was a commercial traveler at the time, and one day while suffering from the stomach trouble I promised myself that I would consult a Christian Science practitioner at the first opportunity. This I did, with the result that I laid aside glasses which I had worn for many years. The stomach trouble disappeared in a short time, and I have not tasted medicine since the first day I read the textbook.

Later I received a severe burn on one of my fingers, and I said to myself, "Try your Christian Science." I repeated "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468). The pain stopped and did not return. At another time I contracted pneumonia. I called a practitioner on the long-distance telephone and went back to bed, where I fell asleep. A few hours later I awoke entirely normal and ate a good dinner of beefsteak.
