"HOLD THY GAZE TO THE LIGHT"

Loving counsel from Mary Baker Eddy in her book "Miscellaneous Writings" reads as follows (p. 355): "Hold thy gaze to the light, and the iris of faith, more beautiful than the rainbow seen from my window at the close of a balmy autumnal day, will span thy heavens of thought."

To hold suggests firmness and persistence, and to gaze means to view with earnest attention; but we must know something of the light before we can hold our gaze to it. In Genesis we read (1:3), "God said, Let there be light: and there was light." This is the light to which we are to hold our gaze. Christian Science shows us that it is the revelation of Spirit, God. We gain the illumination of Spirit through the study of the Bible and of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Spirit is another name for God, the one and only creator. The creator being Spirit, its creation, or manifestation, must be spiritual, a universe of perfect spiritual ideas.

Christ Jesus knew to the full the truth of this one real creation, and being ever conscious of his spiritual origin could declare (John 12:46), "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness." The personal Jesus was not this light. The Christ which he exemplified is the light of the world. Through her spirituality Mrs. Eddy discerned this light, the light of Truth, and thanks to her discovery of the Christ Science, we too may emerge; from the darkness of matter into the light of Spirit.
