Christian Science has met my...
Christian Science has met my every need over a period of thirtysix years. A recent healing I had means a great deal to me, and I wish to share this experience, hoping that it will help others to overcome the attraction of any phase of false appetite.
I have never had to face the problem of giving up liquor or tobacco, because I have never had a desire for them, having learned the truth of God and man in a Christian Science Sunday School and having united with a branch church and The Mother Church at a comparatively early age. However, I did drink a great deal of coffee and enjoyed it. Recently members of my family remarked that I was drinking more coffee than I should, but I answered them: "It doesn't mean a thing to me. I just enjoy the hot drink." The "hot drink" was taken six, eight, or ten times a day, and finally I realized that I was relying on it as a stimulant.
A friend who is a Christian Scientist was talking with me one day, and the conversation came around to the use of coffee and tea. My friend pointed out that our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 406), "The depraved appetite for alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium, is destroyed only by Mind's mastery of the body." Even while my friend was talking I realized that my appetite for coffee was a depraved one. I had a Thermos bottle of coffee with me for my lunch that day, and when my friend had gone I poured the coffee away.
