When Christian Science came...

When Christian Science came into my life I was unhappy as well as unwholesome and unsuccessful, bound by heavy chains of mortal belief and unsavory traits of character. My existence was beset by an overwhelming fear of failure in business and by false appetites expressed in overindulgence in alcoholic beverages, excessive smoking, and other acts which were fast alienating me from my family and friends.

The passing of a dear one who had tried to show me the way out of my condition, but without response from me, shocked me into the realization that I must now endeavor to know more about Christian Science, which had done so much for this loved one. I was at that time away from my family because of an occupational change, and I began to study earnestly the Bible, the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and also the weekly Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly.

I had been a constant smoker of cigars or a pipe and had become an incipient alcoholic, but after I had spent some months in the study of Science the desire for tobacco and alcohol left me. These false habits left so gently that I was not conscious for some time that they no longer existed for me. The healing occurred a number of years ago, and I have never since had the slightest desire to resume these pernicious habits.
