WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
When we attend our Wednesday testimony meetings, is it with the expectation of hearing God speak to us? Do we listen for the spiritual import of the Word? Do we rejoice with our brother when he tells of his healing? Do we speak to him after the meeting and thank him for sharing those experience which give us courage and inspiration to go on in the assurance that Christian Science heals, whether the difficulty is a sick body, a sick relationship, a sick business, or something else?
Sometimes we hesitate to give a testimony for fear it will not be expressed in the best possible way; but we should remember that it is the spirit in which a testimony is given that heals. Many years ago a woman whom the world would call illiterate gave a testimony in a small Christian Science church. It was given with the heart's sincere desire to be helpful. She said that one day while sitting by an open window she saw some horses running away. She ran to the door to see what would happen, when suddenly the thought came to her, "What am I looking for? What am I expecting?" and she realized that she had been looking for and expecting an accident. She returned to her chair and quietly knew the truth as she had been taught to do in Christian Science. Presently two men passed by the window, and she heard them say, "It was miraculous the way those horses stopped running and no one was hurt."
This testimony was heard by a friend of mine who is a Christian Scientist. The following evening as she went to the door to greet a dear member of her family it occurred to her that she had been expecting and looking for a man of varying moods, and each evening she wondered which mood would be expressed. The testimony awakened her to see that she had not been obedient to Mary Baker Eddy's admonition in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 6): "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind." My friend reversed mortal mind's presentation of man and looked for and expected to see only the manifestation of God. She saw God expressed and her dear one healed.
