THE SHEPHERD'S SLING

David the shepherd boy
Paused on the hill;
Saul in dark terror
Stood silent and still,
While Goliath crouched waiting
That brave youth to kill.

Deep into Elah's vale he ran,
The Philistine to fight alone;
In fearless combat he prevailed
With but a shepherd's sling and stone.

Where now the shepherd boy?
Where now the king?
Who felt the sharp sting
Of the smooth little stone
From that terrible sling?

Beyond our view these forms have passed,
But giants still among us move;
The shepherd's sling of pure resolve
Their boastful challenge must reprove.

When roused by error's battle cry,
Run forth with dauntless strength and joy
To win—not as a trembling Saul,
But as a simple shepherd boy!
