PLUG UP THE BREACH

To the one who has a sense of frustration, a feeling that his mental walls have crumbled about him, Christian Science brings healing. By utilizing the power of Truth as this Science teaches, one can build the walls of his consciousness of God so high and strong that the claims of error cannot enter, for in the mind filled with Truth there is no room for error. One need only cling to the truth to find it infallible in solving the problems of the day.

The writer has found continued inspiration and joy in the story of Nehemiah's watchfulness and love, which enabled him to arouse the people to build the wall of Jerusalem. The Bible tells his story (Neh. 2:15): "Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned." Knowing that the people needed to build up their thinking, in order that fear, doubt, and uncertainty could not enter, Nehemiah said to them (2:17), "Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach." He did not, however, scold the people or discourage them further.

As the work progressed, error tried five times to interrupt it, but Nehamiah permitted no breaches to be made. Instead, he prayed to God to strengthen his direction. We read (6: 16), "And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God." So the wall was finished.
