From 1920 to 1939 I had great trouble with my feet, due, I was told, to fallen arches and warts on the bottom of one foot. To walk any distance was misery. I had every medical treatment that was possible, including hospital treatment by an experienced orthopedic surgeon, who said that nothing more could be done for me.

My sister was a very sincere student of Christian Science, and although I was not at all sure what her beliefs were, I used to read some of the literature she gave me when I visited her. She lived some distance from me, but at one time when a Christian Science lecture was to be given in the city in which I lived, she came to hear it.

After the lecture she visited me, and I told her about the trouble with my feet. She very much surprised me by saying, "Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up" (Matt. 15:13). I did not understand how this could apply to my problem, but later by trying to understand this passage from the Scriptures and by reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and attending a Church of Christ, Scientist, I began to understand that the plants mentioned in the text were false traits of character; and I made an effort to correct those I saw in myself.
