Signs of the Times

Professor Norman H. Smith, D.D. in The Expository Times Edinburgh, Scotland

If the Bible is the one lamp above all others unto our feet, it is not because of its literary and artistic virtues. When the Bible has brought hope to the hopeless and life to the dying, it has been because of something else, something other than its literary and artistic value. We are beginning once more to realize what some of us had forgotten—this is a Book in which a man may find God. What the pillar of fire was to the Israelites by night on the long journey to the promised land, so this Book is the light of God whereby He can guide us.... The Bible once again is being restored to its true and unique position. The Light of the world shines clearly above the half-lights of man, and Christ speaks to us out of Scripture in tones that are clear and loud. We see with opened eyes the Word of God, and that is why we praise God today.
