FREEDOM FROM ENSLAVING HABITS

In Genesis we read (1:31), "And God saw every thing that he had made, and behold, it was very good." What was it God saw and pronounced "very good"? The answer to this tremendously important question is revealed in the study of Christian Science, discovered and given to the world by Mary Baker Eddy. In this study we learn that God saw His own reflection, His nature, character, and substance, expressed through the infinite spiritual idea, including all right ideas. In Science, God beholds the immortal selfhood of each one of His children—complete, perfect, and free, having dominion over all.

God's infinite idea, being wholly spiritual, obviously includes no error, no matter, nothing unlike Deity—divine Principle, Truth, Life, and Love. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 519): "Deity was satisfied with His work. How could He be otherwise, since the spiritual creation was the outgrowth, the emanation, of His infinite self-containment and immortal wisdom?"

"But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground" (Gen. 2:6). Certain errors of belief come to thought as tending to obscure and limit man's God-given freedom and dominion. Among them are what are commonly known as the drinking and smoking habits. These habits appear to be widespread among men and women in all walks of life, and certain alluring advertisements in various media, such as newspapers, magazines, billboards, television, and radio, are unquestionably designed to extend and perpetuate them. Now, what comfort and satisfaction are these habits supposed to bring to their devotees?
