[Original testimony in German]
Some neighbor's children, whom...
Some neighbor's children, whom I had watched grow up with my own children in Bremen and met again there many years later, first called my attention to Christian Science when I was in need of physical healing; this was in 1949. They gave me several copies of The Herald of Christian Science (German Edition), saving. "Here is something that will interest you." At first I only smiled. and thought: "What can it be? I have my God; I do not need anything else." However, I did not like to refuse, so I accepted the copies. As I glanced through them in my home in a peaceful snowbound village in the Harz Mountains, an article entitled "Overcoming Through Spiritual Strength" attracted my attention. It gave me much spiritual food and inspired me to procure the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
At first I could, not understand it and laid the book aside. Later, however, after I had read for about an hour each day for three successive days, I felt a great sense of peace come over me. On the fourth day, when I awoke after a refreshing sleep, I felt buoyant and was entirely well. The discomfort from which I had been suffering was gone: the palpitation of the heart had ceased, and I could breathe with ease; the sciatic pains and weakness in my legs had also disappeared. As I was dressing I noticed the truss I had been wearing for ten years for double hernia, and I said to myself, "If you are well, you do not need that any more either." and I did not put it on again. It was the same with the arch supports that I had been wearing. All was well from then on.
I was very happy, and as I continued to read Science and Health I pondered on how best I could express my gratitude to God for the great happiness I was experiencing. I was soon able to help a neighbor who was suffering from a stomach complaint.
